A coastal airfield. Olive-covered heights. Crete, before the invasion.

Maleme 1941: Before the Storm invites you to explore a wartime airfield in miniature. Look closely at a representative Hawker Hurricane Mk I and two grounded Brewster Buffalos, follow the Tavronitis river to its bridge, and discover the tented camp, coastal defences and heights of Hill 107.

The scene rests on a walnut desk, accompanied by a portable gramophone, wooden valve wireless, flying notes and a remembrance poppy. Greek blue, brass and cream paper carry the same presentation as the Wigram and Tatoi dioramas.

There are no missions, scores or time limits. Choose a numbered tour stop, open the drawn airfield plan, or simply look around at your own pace.

HISTORY AND INTERPRETATION

Maleme was central to the Battle of Crete. German airborne troops attacked on 20 May 1941. The withdrawal of the New Zealand defenders from Hill 107 during the following night exposed the landing ground to reinforcements; the counterattack on 22 May did not recover it.

This independent reconstruction draws on wartime photographs, official histories and maps. It is set provisionally around 18 May 1941. Geography is compressed, and buildings, equipment and exact placements are interpreted.

The Hurricane is a representative aircraft, without an individual serial or squadron code. Its exact position and condition on the display date are unconfirmed. Two Buffalos are shown grounded: the date and damage wording in their photographic record require caution. This is not a complete aircraft inventory or a surveyed model of a single day.

The desk objects are representative period designs. The sound effects are recreated impressions. References and further historical notes are available in Field notes inside the experience.
